Pet Sketches - Bella and Cookie

Meet Bella and Cookie! I love little fluffy dogs and I was so happy with the love and friendship portrayed as I had to composite both together.

Pet Sketches - Jango

It's about time I shared some updates on the 2026 Pet Sketches. I usually post my updates on Facebook, and just got a little behind. July was a hard month for Calgary--a missing child found sadly deceased, wildfire smoke and a heatwave, ooof!

It was an asbsolute pleasure to draw Jango for his family. Jango crossed the rainbow bridge, but he was so loved!

Pet Sketches - Chloe and Violet

A precious pair of puppers! For this drawing, I used a lot of light blue, peach and lavender intead of straight grey. I remember my high school art teacher saying white and transparent objects were about the colours you couldn't see.

Pet Sketches - Snooki

Snooki is such a cutie patootie, I had to draw her twice :-)

Pet Sketches - Oswald

2025 was the year of the doodle dog! I think I must have drawn 5 or 6 doodles and silly Oswald was the last of them :-) His different coloured eyes really threw me off!

Pet Sketches - Bigsby

Bigsby's portrait is one that took a while to ideate, and many conversations with one of his humans, but the result was so worth it! So many layers came together to make a very personal picture.

Pet Sketches - Sterling

Photos don't do Sterling's portrait just--this paper piece used many layers of vellum to create the water and glitter accented his coat and sand!

Pet Sketches - Hunny

Hunny is a total cutie patootie! It took a while to finish her picture because there ws some distortion in the reference photo and the position of one eye kept bothering me until I fixed it.

Pet Sketches - Nami

Handsome and snuggable Nami's pictures were done in-between my artistic growth spurt. It was a bit of a struggle between the past and the present!

Pet Sketches - Potato

Potato is a special little guy--so special I added a bonus sketch! The first portrait turned into an accidental papercraft picture--I gouged the background and the only way to fix it was by cutting him out :-)

Potato is equally regal and playful!

Pet Sketches - Indiana Bones

One of the cartoonier pictures I've done. It took a lot of sketches to get to the final picture :-)

Pet Sketches - Bernoulli

I drew a pet celeb at the 2025 Calgary Expo! Bernoulli is one of three puppers from Bunsen Berner BMD. Bernoulli absolutely loved the family cat, Ginger, hence why he's got a kitty pin on his lapel. Follow them for science and shenanigans :-)

Pet Sketches - Kona

So, a weird thing happened over the course of 2025--my style and skill got a glow-up!

I really can't explain how, but I started paying more attention to the coat patterns and details, and voila! Much like the picture of Andy, I found myself staring at the pictures and confused about how I drew it :-D

Pet Sketches - Gus

Gus's picture had to go in the mail--his human ordered his picture on Thursday night of Calgary Expo, but I was so tired that the picture was not going to turn out well. Oooof! I have it sitting on my desk and it just wasn't happening at 8pm!

I'm thankful to everyone who lets me mail their picture after the show--it's well worth it!

Pet Sketches - Tynk-R-Belle

This is a special commission of an OTRB chihuahua--the customer provided me with many photos and the one that caught my attention was one of Tynk in a ballerina outfit.

I constructed a doll and added the dress. It's a simple paper art picture, but so effective and heartwarming. Our pets spark imagination in so many ways!

New Pet Portrait--Pupper Pair

I just finished editing this picture despite sending the original off in the mail a couple of weeks ago. It felt like the camera captured every bump in the paper.

Pet Sketches...Beckham

Can you believe I'm still working on pet portraits from last year? Unfortunately I had some health challenges through the fall and a tooth pulled in December, which caused some delays. I still work full-time, but the list of portraits is winding down. I've been so busy I'm finally sharing the pictures in all my other online spaces.

I first drew Beckham as a puppy years ago and it was delightful that his person came back to give me an update and order a new portrait in 2023.

Tony! Tony! Tony!

For years now I've done pet portraits at the local comic expo, but COVID has put the kibosh on that. I was able to attend a parrot show called Parrot Palooza at the end of September though and here's one of the subjects, a French bulldog named Tony.

I found it very hard to cartoon Tony and it actually took two tries. Click through for larger.

His human also ordered a realistic portrait which was done on pastel paper with assorted pastels. I loved how this one turned out!

This Post Grad Life--Tying Up Loose Ends

I'll admit I'm not the speediest artist, but I began this trio of dog portraits in 2019! It was hard to find a good chunk of time to finish them while I was finishing up school. Naturally there was a lot of things to do and I was only able to sit down and finish the final portrait this month.

Each portrait is 4x6" and was rendered in pencil crayon, marker, and PanPastel. Click through to see the larger version on Flickr.
